Many viewers feel that Tyler Perry continually produces similar films, a sentiment echoed for years. Perry’s latest movie, Divorce in the Black, stars Meagan Good, Cory Hardrict, Richard Lawson, and Debbi Morgan. When Prime Video released the trailer on Instagram, numerous comments pointed out Perry’s recurring plotlines. Many criticized his persistent “Black woman in distress” trope, while others defended his focus on a specific audience.
Repetition in Tyler Perry’s Films
One commenter noted, “He needs intense therapy because he keeps making the same movie.” Another observed, “Every Tyler Perry movie features a struggling Black woman, an awful boyfriend or husband, a journey to self-worth, a fightback or spiritual awakening, and a reward with a new man. The end.”
Another suggestion from the comments asked, “Can Tyler Perry make a movie about a successful Black marriage?” Someone else compared the upcoming film to Perry’s previous work, calling it “A 2024 diary of a mad Black woman….”
Defenders And Critics
Despite the criticism, some defended Perry. One person said, “Allow my man Tyler to make his money. If you want your story, go and make your own movie.” Another commented, “Don’t hate me, but this one actually looks decent [scared emoji].”
The trailer begins with Ava, played by Good, dining with her husband Dallas, portrayed by Hardrict. True to Perry’s style, Ava faces a tough situation — she’s in an abusive relationship. She eventually leaves him and finds a new partner, but Dallas starts stalking her.
Similarities to Previous Works
The plot is reminiscent of the 2015 movie The Perfect Guy starring Sanaa Lathan, Morris Chestnut, and Michael Ealy, albeit with a different style and director. It also shares similarities with many of Perry’s other movies, even resembling his February release, Mea Culpa.
The Return of Madea
In the past, viewers expressed similar frustrations with Perry’s iconic character Mabel “Madea” Earlene Simmons. Perry vowed to retire the character with 2019’s Madea Family Funeral, but revived her in 2022’s A Madea Homecoming on Netflix.
