Will Smith Set to Join Sci-Fi Thriller Resistor Following Bad Boys: Ride or Die’s Breakout Success.
The Smith-naissance is in full swing. Will Smith has made a major comeback with Bad Boys: Ride or Die, which earned over $220 million in its first two weeks. Now, he’s set to join another high-profile sci-fi thriller at Sony Pictures.
On June 18, Deadline reported that Smith will star in Resistor, an adaptation of Daniel Suarez’s book Influx. The 2014 novel is a sci-fi thriller about physicist Jon Grady and his team, who discover a device that can reflect gravity. This breakthrough promises to revolutionize physics and the future. However, a covert organization called the Bureau of Technology Control shuts down the lab, seizes the device, and imprisons Grady in a high-tech facility. Grady and other prisoners must not only escape but also expose the hidden enemy that has kept technological advancements from humanity.
Escape Artists, the production company behind the project, has been developing it for some time. Once they had a script that excited executives, they offered Smith the starring role, closing the deal shortly after Bad Boys 4’s successful box office opening.
Smith has a history with science fiction, having starred in blockbusters like Independence Day, I, Robot, and Gemini Man. He is also attached to I Am Legend 2, which plans to bring his character back using the alternate ending of the original film.
