Jane Sibbett, known for her role as Carol Willick on Friends, has addressed rumors suggesting she was originally considered for the iconic role of Rachel Green, famously portrayed by Jennifer Aniston during the show’s decade-long run.
During an interview on the Australian news program Sunrise, Sibbett responded to host Nat Barr’s inquiry about the casting speculation. Barr asked if it was true that Sibbett had been the initial choice for Rachel before Aniston. Sibbett clarified, “Almost. It’s a bit exaggerated.”
Sibbett recounted that she had auditioned for Rachel and received positive feedback, prompting her manager to schedule a screen test the following week. However, upon learning of her pregnancy, the casting direction shifted. Despite not landing Rachel, Sibbett was delighted to accept the role of Carol Willick after Anita Barone’s departure following the pilot episode.
Reflecting on her time on Friends, Sibbett also discussed the impact of her character, Carol, and the controversial storyline involving Carol’s same-sex marriage to Susan, played by Jessica Hecht. She acknowledged the episode “The One with the Lesbian Wedding” for sparking discussions on love and acceptance, despite facing bans in certain regions.
Sibbett fondly remembered her late co-star Matthew Perry, emphasizing his humor and warmth both on and off-screen. Perry, who portrayed Chandler Bing, passed away in October, with his death attributed to drowning exacerbated by the effects of ketamine. Sibbett paid tribute to Perry’s enduring legacy and his openness about his struggles with addiction, as detailed in his memoir Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing.
Jane Sibbett’s contributions to Friends as Carol Willick continue to resonate with fans, showcasing her pivotal role in the show’s cultural impact and enduring popularity.
