Prince William made a significant solo appearance in Scotland to honor Queen Camilla and Prince Edward at a special ceremony. The event marked their official induction into the Order of the Thistle, Scotland’s prestigious order of chivalry.
The ceremony, held at St Giles’ Cathedral in Edinburgh on Wednesday (July 3), saw Camilla, 76, and Edward, 60, appointed as Royal Knights of the Order in a private ceremony attended by Prince William. Notably, Kate Middleton was absent, undergoing chemotherapy following a recent cancer diagnosis.
The Order of the Thistle is under the sovereignty of King Charles, 75, who personally bestows these honors independently. The Queen, who patronizes numerous charities including Maggie’s Cancer Care Centres and Crathie Opportunity Holidays, was also present to commemorate the occasion.
For Prince William, this gesture of support for Camilla may carry added significance amid reported tensions with his brother Prince Harry. Harry allegedly harbors resentment towards Camilla, feeling her involvement in royal affairs has been disruptive.
In addition to her new honor, Camilla is an honorary member of local organizations such as the Ballater Women’s Institute. Meanwhile, Prince Edward, known for his patronage of Scottish charitable organizations, including the Edinburgh International Festival, also received recognition during the ceremony.
The event also saw the appointment of lawyer Baroness Helena Kennedy and Scotland’s first black professor Sir Geoff Palmer to the Order, underscoring its diverse membership. King Charles and the Queen will continue their engagements, including festivities marking the 900th anniversary of Edinburgh Castle.
