The upcoming series “Daredevil: Born Again” has drawn comparisons to the popular revival of “X-Men ’97,” a show that has garnered significant acclaim from LGBTQ+ fans. “X-Men: The Animated Series” and its revival, “X-Men ’97,” quickly became favorites earlier this year, especially within the LGBTQ+ community. This new series featured several canonically queer characters, references to significant events that impacted the LGBTQ+ community, and even included a love confession from the non-binary shapeshifter Morph to Wolverine, showcasing its modern approach.
The excitement surrounding the reboot of Netflix’s “Daredevil” series, now titled “Daredevil: Born Again,” is palpable, especially since it has been thematically compared to “X-Men ’97.” In an episode of “The Official Marvel Podcast,” Marvel Studios’ Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation Brad Winderbaum discussed how the series will chart a new path for the Man Without Fear while drawing parallels to the acclaimed “X-Men ’97.”
“Daredevil is incredible. It’s similar in some ways to X-Men ’97, because it’s reviving something that the fans love, but it is taking it in a new direction,” Winderbaum explained. “These characters have matured.
The universe is different than it was. Things have changed. Society’s changed.”
Winderbaum also hinted at the return of the classic Daredevil villain Kingpin, played by Vincent D’Onofrio. He revealed that the civilian identities of Matt Murdock (Daredevil) and Wilson Fisk (Kingpin) will engage in a professional-level battle.
“Matt and Wilson have changed, and their characters are going to collide in ways we’ve never seen before,” he said. “It’s no longer enough to try and murder each other. There’s a whole game of politics at play.”
Charlie Cox, who played the blind lawyer/superhero between 2015 and 2018, will reprise his role in this new series. Cox also made a brief appearance as Daredevil in Tom Holland’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home.”
Marvel’s next project, “Deadpool & Wolverine,” will feature Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, with Emma Corrin playing the mysterious villain Cassandra Nova.
“Daredevil: Born Again” is set to premiere on Disney+ next March.
