Julie Plec, the co-creator of The Vampire Diaries, has hinted at a possible new series within the beloved franchise. This news comes despite the conclusion of the original show and its spinoffs, The Originals and Legacies.
Plec, who developed the supernatural teen drama with Kevin Williamson, spoke at the premiere of her new Max series, The Girls on The Bus, starring Melissa Benoist. She mentioned to Screen Rant that she still has ideas for expanding The Vampire Diaries universe, drawing inspiration from L. J. Smith’s book series. “100%. Yeah, I have a story I still want to tell,” Plec said. “I know that the people who are on the book have a story that they still want to tell. I’m sure Warner Bros. has plenty of stories they want to tell. So, the hope is they’ll give me the opportunity to do it again. So, we’ll see.”
The Vampire Diaries originally aired on The CW from September 10, 2009, to March 10, 2017, running for 171 episodes over eight seasons. The pilot episode attracted the largest audience for any series premiere on The CW since its inception in 2006. Set in the fictional town of Mystic Falls, Virginia, the series followed the love triangle between Elena Gilbert, played by Nina Dobrev, and vampire brothers Stefan and Damon Salvatore, portrayed by Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder, respectively. The show received numerous nominations and awards, including Teen Choice Awards, People’s Choice Awards, and Saturn Awards.
The Vampire Diaries universe faced a major setback in 2022 when Legacies, the second spinoff, was canceled. This cancelation came after The CW was acquired by Nexstar, which shifted the network’s focus away from dramas targeting younger audiences. Despite this, Plec remains hopeful about the franchise’s future, revealing that plans for another spinoff were in place before Legacies was canceled.
Plec’s comments suggest that any new series would need to fit within the existing continuity of the TV universe while possibly exploring elements from the books not yet seen on screen. The novels feature a wider range of supernatural beings, including kitsunes, psychics, and witches, alongside the familiar vampires and werewolves. A new series could explore these aspects, bringing fresh intrigue to the enduring Vampire Diaries saga.
