Simon Cowell, renowned for his critical judging on shows like American Idol and America’s Got Talent, recently faced unexpectedly low turnout at auditions for his new venture in search of a boy band sensation.
Cowell, whose new project “The Midas Touch” is set to debut on Netflix under a major deal, held auditions in Liverpool recently, as reported by The Sun. Despite expectations of a large turnout, the event reportedly saw sparse attendance, with only a fraction of anticipated participants showing up.
According to sources cited by The Sun, hopefuls began arriving slowly on the morning of the auditions, but the numbers never exceeded about 40 at any given time. This contrasted sharply with previous auditions for similar projects, such as X Factor, which drew thousands of aspiring musicians.
The Independent also reported on the lackluster response, describing the auditions as having “failed drastically.” Speculation arose earlier when The Sun noted a reduction in audition dates, suggesting potential challenges for Cowell’s ambitious new show.
In an interview with the BBC, Cowell expressed his concern over the changing landscape of music discovery, noting a decline in British boy bands’ global impact since the era of One Direction. He acknowledged the daunting nature of launching “The Midas Touch,” admitting to Hello! Magazine that the project represented one of his riskiest ventures yet, particularly in today’s social media-dominated music industry.
Despite the initial setback, Cowell remains optimistic that subsequent publicity and auditions will generate renewed interest in “The Midas Touch,” underscoring his determination to uncover the next breakout stars in the competitive world of music.
