Glen Powell, one of Hollywood’s rising stars, is determined to finish his degree while working on his next movie. The actor, known for his roles in “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Anyone But You,” and “Twisters,” plans to complete his degree in Spanish and early American history at the University of Texas.
Powell, 35, hails from Austin, Texas, and recently moved back to his home state to be closer to his family after living in Hollywood. In an interview with IndieWire, Powell shared his plans to attend Zoom classes while filming the remake of the 1987 sci-fi film “The Running Man” in the UK.
“I’m going to be in London, but I will return for supervised exams,” he said. “They’re letting me handle distance learning. I’ll be Zooming into classes but need to be back for proctored exams.”
Powell will travel to Texas “two or three times a semester” and noted that “The Running Man” director Edgar Wright has been supportive of his educational pursuits.
“Edgar has been very understanding about allowing me to finish my degree while working on his major film,” Powell said.
In May, Powell was featured on the cover of The Hollywood Reporter, highlighting “the new A-list.” He told the magazine that his success in Hollywood has enabled him to return to Texas.
“I feel like I’ve earned the ability to go back to my family,” he said, adding that fellow Texan actor Matthew McConaughey advised him to make the move.
Powell also emphasized the emotional significance of completing his degree, which he started before his rise to fame.
“It’s really important to my mom and it’s an emotional thing for me,” he said.
Powell is close to his parents, who often attend press events with him, and his two sisters. In his interview with IndieWire, he clarified that he has “nothing against Hollywood” but prefers spending time in Austin between projects.
“I love being around people who love entertainment and what Hollywood represents,” he said. “But for recharging between projects, Austin is the place for me.”
