Simon Cowell has been known for his harsh and often humorous criticism since his debut as a judge on American Idol. Over the years, his blunt remarks have garnered both laughter and backlash from viewers.
While some find his comments witty, others believe he can be unnecessarily harsh. However, Cowell’s tough exterior is largely an act he adopted for television. In reality, Cowell has a softer side, particularly evident in his love for dogs. This gentle side was showcased during an episode of America’s Got Talent, thanks to fellow judge Sofía Vergara.
Simon Cowell’s Affection for Dogs
During the season 19 premiere of AGT, Vergara was seen watching a pet cam on her phone during a break between acts. “Are we looking in on puppies?” judge Heidi Klum asked. Vergara revealed she was watching footage of her dog, a chihuahua named Amore.
Cowell then asked, “Oh, is that your little dog? That is the cutest dog.” This moment allowed the public to see a rare glimpse of Cowell’s softer side. Vergara agreed and mentioned she initially thought the puppy was a stuffed animal.
Cowell’s affection for Amore didn’t stop there. Shortly after meeting the puppy, he shared pictures of himself with Amore on social media, captioning the post, “I’ve just fallen in love.”
Cowell’s Interaction with Dogs on AGT
Later in the episode, a basset hound named Daisy May impressed the judges by navigating an obstacle course with her owner, Amy. Cowell couldn’t resist Daisy May’s cuteness and made kissing noises into the microphone. When asked what he was doing, he replied, “I’m talking to the dog.” He even complimented Daisy May backstage, calling her a pretty girl.
Cowell’s Personal Dog Adoption
In early 2024, Cowell adopted a German Shepherd named Pebbles. He shared a photo of his son, Eric, with their new family member on social media, captioning it “LOVE.” Heidi Klum commented, “Absolutely beautiful.” Cowell first introduced Pebbles to the world on January 11 with an Instagram post, writing, “Our family has had a new arrival… her name is Pebbles.”
Cowell’s Son’s Favorite AGT Contestant
In 2023, a Border Collie named Hurricane and her coach, Adrian Stoica, won season 18 of AGT. Cowell revealed that they were his son Eric’s favorite act of the season. “Eric, my son, was at the show last night. And I asked him this morning, ‘Who do you think is going to win?’ and he said, ‘Hurricane.’ He really called it,” Cowell shared.
“Eric is obsessed with this dog. During the auditions, he met Hurricane and Adrian, and he’s a great guy, and she is just adorable. Watching Eric as the results came in, he was jumping in the air. He was so excited,” Cowell added.
Stoica, Hurricane, and Eric even posed for pictures together on the red carpet in October. Stoica expressed gratitude on Instagram, saying, “I’m so grateful for all the love you’ve given to Hurricane these days, starting from the Judges, Terry, Manolo, all the AGT staff, and a special new friend of hers, Eric! And thanks to you all here for your words and your support: precious!”
Cowell’s Longstanding Love for Dogs
Cowell’s love for dogs is not new. In a 2015 interview with Glamour, he said, “I have always loved dogs but had no idea how much happiness they would bring to my life.
Squiddly, Diddly, and, now, Freddie, are hugely important members of my family. The thought of any dog being mistreated sickens me.”
Simon Cowell’s interaction with dogs on America’s Got Talent and his personal experiences show a different, more compassionate side to the famously tough judge.
