Taylor Swift’s album The Tortured Poets Department was poised to make history but fell short after Eminem’s new release claimed the top spot on the Billboard 200. Swift’s album, which had been dominating the chart since its debut, was tied with Morgan Wallen’s One Thing at a Time for the second-most weeks at No. 1 from a debut.
Before this week, The Tortured Poets Department had spent twelve consecutive weeks at No. 1, equaling the record held by Whitney Houston. Houston’s album held the top position for eleven weeks during the 1980s, making Swift’s album a significant contender.
Had The Tortured Poets Department maintained its position for a thirteenth week, it would have matched Stevie Wonder’s Songs in the Key of Life, which holds the record for the most weeks at No. 1 from its debut.
Despite this setback, Swift’s album continues to perform strongly. It could potentially return to the top spot if there is a lull in major new releases. However, upcoming projects from artists like Stray Kids and BTS’s Jimin are expected to challenge for the No. 1 position.
This week, Eminem’s new album, The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce), debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, ending Swift’s streak. This marks a significant shift as Eminem’s latest release takes the lead in the competitive music industry.
