Fifteen years after their debut as Deadpool and Wolverine in the ill-fated X-Men: Origins — Wolverine, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman have teamed up again for a proper buddy movie.
On Monday, Reynolds and Jackman premiered their new film in New York. Press across the country also attended the first full screenings. Early reactions are now appearing on social media, preceding the official critics’ reviews set for release on Tuesday. (Scroll down to read the reactions.)
At the New York premiere, NSYNC made an appearance, according to a Hollywood Reporter eyewitness. The movie is projected to have a massive $165 million-plus domestic opening this weekend, potentially making it the biggest R-rated debut of all time.
Shawn Levy, a frequent collaborator of Reynolds, directs Deadpool & Wolverine. He co-wrote the script with Reynolds, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, and Zeb Wells. Emma Corrin stars as the antagonist, with several familiar faces from the Deadpool and Wolverine franchises, including Dafne Keen, who played Wolverine’s daughter Laura in Logan (2017).
The journey to bring this film to the big screen has been long and complicated. The success of 20th Century Fox’s Deadpool in 2016 propelled Reynolds and the character to new heights. The sequel, Deadpool 2, followed in 2018. However, the third installment took six years to materialize, complicated by 20th Century Fox’s sale to Disney. This move gave Marvel Studios access to the Deadpool and X-Men characters for the first time and marks Marvel Studios’ first R-rated film.
The premiere precedes Thursday’s San Diego Comic-Con panel for the film and Marvel’s Saturday evening panel, where future movies like Captain America are expected to be showcased.
