Will Smith is making a return to the music scene with his first album since 2005, and it’s set to explore new territory. The actor and rapper recently shared in an interview with the Instagram account Black Film Allies that he’s been diligently working on new music. “Over the past year and a half, I’ve been in the studio,” Smith revealed. “This project is the most personal and impactful music I’ve ever created. The central theme is ‘Dance in your darkest moments.’”
Smith debuted a new song, “You Can Make It,” at the BET Awards this year. The track made a strong showing, reaching No. 3 on the Hot Gospel Songs chart and currently sits at No. 14 after three weeks.
In a recent Instagram Reel, Smith and Russ were seen testing their song “Work of Art” in a car. Smith also mentioned that he had just finished his album while introducing the clip. His last full-length album, Lost and Found, was released in 2005.
Although the album’s title and release date are still under wraps, an Instagram page and a website titled Dance in Your Darkest Moments are currently under development. The Instagram bio describes it as “a human wellness initiative designed to inspire self-exploration, encourage acceptance, and celebrate life.”
Additionally, Smith recently shared a video on Instagram discussing the creation of his classic song “Summertime.” Long-standing rumors about Rakim ghostwriting his verses were addressed when Smith confirmed he was trying to emulate Rakim’s style. “I was absolutely trying to sound like you on ‘Summertime,’” Smith told Rakim backstage at CBS’ A Grammy Salute to 50 Years of Hip Hop last year. “I had been shouting all night and couldn’t get my ‘happy-go-lucky’ high voice. Hula then suggested I go for that Rakim style.”
