A new Netflix series is gaining acclaim from fans, who rate it a ’15/10′ and claim it surpasses Game of Thrones.
While fans of fantasy have enjoyed House of the Dragon as a prequel to Game of Thrones, there’s always a quest for the next big hit. Game of Thrones, which aired for eight seasons starting in 2011, concluded in 2019, leaving a void that House of the Dragon has partially filled since its debut in 2022. With the second season wrapping up in August 2024, viewers seeking a new series can turn to The Last Kingdom.
Originally broadcast on the BBC before moving to Netflix, The Last Kingdom consists of five seasons and a feature-length film, The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die, available for streaming.
Set in 9th and 10th century England, the series depicts the conflict between the Saxons and the Danes. The first season adapts the initial two novels from Bernard Cornwell’s The Saxon Stories: The Last Kingdom and The Pale Horseman. The show portrays the arrival of the Great Heathen Army led by Guthrum and Ubba Ragnarsson, altering the dynamic between Vikings and Anglo-Saxons. Alexander Dreymon stars as Uhtred, the ruler of Bamburgh, with David Schofield as his advisor, Abbot Eadred. The cast also includes Joseph Milson, Eliza Butterworth, Millie Brady, and Toby Regbo.
On social media platform X (formerly Twitter), fans have expressed high praise for the series. @rhagertha described it as “a masterpiece,” while @4amir_Utd commented, “The Last Kingdom. What a show. Almost had me in tears, the last scene of the final episode. Anyone who hasn’t watched this show is genuinely missing out.”
Some fans even argue that The Last Kingdom outshines Game of Thrones. @olusholatash claimed, “This show is better than Game of Thrones and Vikings put together!! No unnecessary plot twists, direct and relatable… makes a lot of sense and not unnecessarily long, just five seasons! The Last Kingdom is 15/10 rating!” Similarly, @EndogenicN01se agreed, “The Last Kingdom is better than Game of Thrones btw.”
Critics have also responded positively, with the series earning a remarkable 91 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to Game of Thrones’ 89 percent average score.
