Johnny Depp has honored his late co-star, Tamayo Perry, known for his role in “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.”
Perry, a 49-year-old actor and lifeguard, tragically passed away in June following an apparent shark attack.
Depp, who starred as Jack Sparrow in the “Pirates” series, shared a heartfelt message on Instagram Stories Sunday, remembering Perry fondly. Alongside a black-and-white photo of Perry, Depp wrote, “Even though it was some years ago now, I remember Tamayo well. A lovely man, with a huge heart and zest for life…”
Depp also directed followers to a GoFundMe page set up by Perry’s wife, Emilia, expressing his support. “Emilia, I send you all my love and strength. You are in my thoughts,” Depp added.
The fundraiser has so far collected $112,845 of its $200,000 goal.
The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Perry’s death on June 24. The cause of death is still under investigation, pending autopsy results.
According to reports, the shark attack occurred off the coast of Oahu, Hawaii, on June 23. Emergency responders, including the Honolulu Ocean Safety Department, found Perry—who was on duty as an ocean safety lifeguard—after receiving reports of a man severely injured by a shark. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Honolulu Ocean Safety Acting Chief Kurt Lager described Perry as “a lifeguard loved by all.” Lager added, “He’s a professional surfer known worldwide. Tamayo’s personality was infectious, and as much as people loved him, he loved everyone else more.”
