The sequel to the superhero horror film Constantine has been in development for a long time, but recent progress has been made on the script.
Producer Akiva Goldsman provided an update during Collider’s Producers on Producing Panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2024. When asked about the highly anticipated sequel, he said, “It’s going fine. I’m writing a script about Constantine 2. It’s good. I hope to have a script for my partners soon.” When asked about how long he’s been working on the project, Goldsman humorously replied, “Yes.”
Constantine 2 Faced Delays
The development of Constantine 2 began in early 2023 but was halted due to the WGA strike. This pause caused doubts about the film’s future. However, director Francis Lawrence remained optimistic after the strike. “We’ve had many obstacles [with production],” he said. “Me, Keanu [Reeves], Akiva [Goldsman] have tried over the years to regain control of the character because it had been handed over.”
Lawrence elaborated, “I think NBC did a TV show, and then J.J. [Abrams] was going to try and do something. Then the regime at DC changed, and they have their plans. But luckily, we managed to regain some control and started working on ideas for Constantine 2, which we’re really excited about. It’s still very early, as the strike put it on hold for a bit. We plan to reconvene after Thanksgiving and dive back in.”
In February 2024, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura expressed hope for the film’s eventual production. “I hope it does, because he’s a great character,” he said. “Great in comic books, and it was great making that first movie. It’s such an alternative kind of character.” Comparing Constantine to another character who gains new abilities at a personal cost, he added, “It’s what really attracted me to Madame Web, the idea that she becomes blind and transforms into something else was very appealing.”
Released in 2005, Constantine is based on the DC Comics/Vertigo Comics Hellblazer graphic novels. According to the official synopsis, the story follows John Constantine (Reeves), “a cynical exorcist who can perceive and communicate with half-angels and half-demons in their true forms and travel between Earth and Hell.” The cast also includes Rachel Weisz, Shia LaBeouf, Tilda Swinton, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Djimon Hounsou, Gavin Rossdale, and Peter Stormare.
