Downton Abbey is reportedly making a comeback with a seventh series.
The popular historical drama, which aired from 2010 to 2015 and featured stars like Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery, Laura Carmichael, and Dame Maggie Smith, had two successful movie spin-offs in 2019 and 2022.
According to an industry insider, the show is currently in production for its seventh series. The source told the Daily Mail, “Filming has been underway for several weeks, and the level of secrecy is unprecedented. Those involved have signed non-disclosure agreements to keep details under wraps, but there is significant excitement about the show’s return.”
The source added, “The original series was a massive success, and there are still many stories left to tell. It would have been a shame not to continue, but now it’s happening.”
While it is not yet confirmed which cast members will return, it is possible that Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery, and Elizabeth McGovern, who starred in the 2022 film Downton Abbey: A New Era, might reprise their roles.
Previously, Hugh Bonneville expressed that he felt the franchise had reached a natural conclusion. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter at the time of the movie’s release, he said, “On a practical level, I thought it was a good time to end. I considered the possibility of continuing, but I worried it might become repetitive. The second film was a joyful conclusion, and it seemed like the right moment to stop.”
