Newly leaked photos from the set of HBO’s The Last of Us provide strong hints about the extent of the video game’s content that will be included in Season 2. The first season of the HBO series encompassed the entirety of the first game and its DLC. However, the showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have indicated that the second season will not cover all of the second game. Instead, they plan to spread out the story of The Last of Us Part II over two or possibly three seasons.
Season 2 of The Last of Us is anticipated to have seven episodes, two fewer than the nine episodes in the first season. There has been a lot of speculation about how the series will adapt the game. Questions arise about whether it will linearize the Jackson flashbacks or present Ellie and Abby’s perspectives of the three days in Seattle simultaneously.
The latest leaked photos from the set shed light on how faithfully the series will adapt the game and how much of the game will be covered in these seven episodes.
Set Photos of Bella Ramsey & Young Mazino Hint at Comprehensive Coverage of Ellie’s Seattle Days.
A Reddit user, u/OwenChristopherNDA, leaked a photo from the set showing Bella Ramsey and Young Mazino, who plays Jesse, on a cloudy street. If the series stays true to the game’s narrative, this scene is from Ellie and Jesse’s journey to the aquarium on Seattle Day 3. In the game, Ellie insists on not leaving Seattle without Tommy, and Dina insists on staying with Ellie, leading Jesse to reluctantly join Ellie to find Abby at the aquarium.
This journey is the final leg of Ellie’s quest for revenge. Jesse wants to abandon the revenge mission and focus on rescuing Tommy, but Ellie secretly remains fixated on avenging Joel. Ellie eventually leaves Jesse behind to pursue Abby at the aquarium, but Abby is not there. Ellie ends up killing two of Abby’s close friends, Owen and Mel. Tommy and Jesse then arrive to bring Ellie back to their theater hideout. Their plan to abandon the revenge mission and return to Jackson is interrupted by Abby’s unexpected arrival at the theater.
The recent set photos suggest that these events will be included in Season 2. Earlier photos showed Ramsey and Isabela Merced in a location resembling the Capitol Hill section from Ellie and Dina’s Seattle Day 1. These photos, along with the absence of Kaitlyn Dever, who plays Abby, from the Seattle sets, imply that Season 2 will focus on Ellie’s three days in Seattle. Abby’s days are likely being saved for Season 3, maintaining the game’s structure.
