Fans once again stepped in to sing Bon Iver singer Justin Vernon’s parts during the breakup song on Aug. 3.
Taylor Swift transformed part of her Eras Tour show in Poland into a duet!
At her third and final Eras Tour show in Warsaw on Saturday, Aug. 3, the 14-time Grammy winner surprised the sold-out crowd by performing a mashup of “The Black Dog” and the folklore breakup song “exile” featuring Bon Iver.
During the mashup on piano, part of the secret songs portion of the show, Swift’s fans filled in for Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon, singing his verse and back-and-forth parts since he wasn’t there.
This marks the fourth time Swift, 34, has performed “exile” as a surprise song during the Eras Tour. She previously sang it in Los Angeles in August 2023, Australia in February, and Scotland in June.
In a fan-captured video, the crowd erupted as Swift began “exile” before they joined in on Vernon’s first verse.
“I can see you standing, honey / With his arms around your body / Laughin’, but the joke’s not funny at all,” the fans sang along with Swift. “And it took you five whole minutes / To pack us up and leave me with it / Holdin’ all this love out here in the hall.”
As Swift sang her parts during the chorus, bridge, and outro, the Swifties harmonized loudly with Vernon’s back-and-forth sections.
For the guitar portion of the secret songs segment, Swift played a mashup of “Today Was a Fairytale” from Fearless and “I Think He Knows” from Lover. At one point, she remarked, “Every day is a fairytale in Poland!”
Thursday night marked the start of her Warsaw leg, which was Swift’s first-ever headlining concert in Poland, as she had skipped the country on her last five tours.
During her second performance in Poland on Friday, she wowed the crowd by speaking several Polish phrases. She greeted the stadium with “warszawa, witajcie na Eras Tour” (“welcome to the Eras Tour”), expressed her love with “kocham was” (“I love you”), thanked them with “dziękjię” (“thank you”), and asked “wszystko dobrze?” (loosely translating to “everything’s fine?” or “all good?”).
The show follows a whirlwind couple of weeks for the “Cruel Summer” singer, who recently toured Germany, playing seven shows in three cities and debuting live performances of various songs from her extensive discography.
In Munich, the last city before Poland, Swift made headlines for the thousands of fans who gathered on a hillside outside the concert venue to watch the three-and-a-half-hour show from afar. “We’ve got people in a park outside the stadium, thousands of people listening from out there!” Swift told the German crowd. “I just feel so incredibly welcomed, and we’re gonna spend all night trying to make it up to you.”
While touring Europe this summer, Swift has also cheered on Team USA as the Olympics began last week. On July 27, NBC unveiled a promotional video for the American team featuring several top athletes alongside a live recording of Swift performing her Reputation hit “…Ready For It?” on the Eras Tour. “So ready to scream at my TV cheering for these athletes ,” Swift wrote, resharing the clip on her Instagram Stories and Facebook.
Next week, the “All Too Well” singer will play Eras Tour shows in Vienna, Austria, and then close out the European leg of the tour with five nights in London later in August.
