Social Media Revels in Tim Walz’s Varied Musical References, From Beyoncé and Taylor Swift to Prince and Bob Dylan.
On Tuesday, Vice President Kamala Harris announced Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate for the 2024 Democratic ticket. The internet quickly delved into the life of the former high school teacher and decorated veteran, exploring his social media history to uncover his musical preferences.
A deep dive into Walz’s social media reveals his diverse musical tastes spanning decades. He’s a fan of both Taylor Swift and Beyoncé, appreciates classic rock, and is a vinyl enthusiast. Walz, despite not being from New Jersey, loves Bruce Springsteen and is a big supporter of Minnesota’s music scene, enjoying artists like Prince, the Replacements, and Lizzo.
At 60 years old, Walz has a rich history. His social media provides insight into his favorite musicians and why he believes Warren Zevon is underrated. Swifties, known for their online detective skills, found his tweets about Taylor Swift. In 2022, Walz tweeted that his cat, Afton, was upset about missing Swift’s concert tickets. “Afton after being online all day and not getting Taylor Swift tickets,” he wrote, sharing a photo of his unhappy cat.
However, Afton’s disappointment was short-lived. On June 23, 2023, Walz declared “Taylor Swift Days” in Minnesota to coincide with her shows at U.S. Bank Stadium. He praised Swift in his proclamation, noting her positive influence and the inspiration she brings to Minnesotans and people worldwide.
Walz’s admiration for Swift extends beyond proclamations. In May, he signed the “Taylor Swift bill” into law, enhancing transparency in ticket purchasing for live events. Rep. Kelly Moller authored the bill, known as HF1989, following her struggles to buy tickets for the Eras Tour. Walz emphasized the importance of fair ticketing practices, ensuring fans don’t fall victim to fraudulent sales and resellers.
In addition to his legislative efforts, Walz attended the opening of Conor McPherson’s musical “Girl From the North Country” last October. The musical, featuring 20 Bob Dylan songs, including “Like a Rolling Stone” and “All Along the Watchtower,” premiered in Minnesota. Walz tweeted his support, celebrating Minnesota’s rich arts community and Dylan’s legacy.
Walz’s musical journey, from his love for vinyl to his legislative actions inspired by Taylor Swift, showcases a governor deeply connected to the cultural fabric of his state.
