Tom Cruise made a dramatic entrance at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games closing ceremony, adding a touch of Hollywood glamour as the city officially passed the Olympic hosting duties to Los Angeles for 2028.
The closing ceremony, held at the Stade de France, featured Cruise abseiling from the stadium’s roof to the iconic “Mission Impossible” theme music. This moment underscored Los Angeles’ unique appeal, with the city embracing its Hollywood roots. In addition to Cruise, native Californian artists Billie Eilish, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Snoop Dogg, and Dr. Dre performed via video link from Long Beach in Los Angeles. The event also included a live performance of the U.S. national anthem by five-time Grammy-winning artist H.E.R., who sang from inside the stadium.
Leon Marchant, a French swimmer and the most decorated athlete of the Games with four gold medals and one bronze, played a significant role in the ceremony. He collected the Olympic flame from the Tuileries Gardens in Paris and brought it into the arena, where it was officially extinguished, marking the end of the 2024 Games.
Team GB, which surpassed its Tokyo 2020 medal tally with 65 medals, was well-represented at the ceremony. Notable athletes like Tom Daley, Helen Glover, and Caden Cunningham attended, dressed in Hawaiian-style shirts featuring the emblems of every nation in Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
Men’s triathlon winner Alex Yee and trampoline gold medallist Bryony Page, two of Team GB’s 14 gold medallists, were chosen to be the flagbearers for Great Britain at the ceremony.
