During an appearance at last year’s New York Comic Con (NYCC), Chris Evans, known for his iconic role as Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), opened up about his aspirations to direct another film. While Evans has excelled in acting roles like Captain America and Johnny Storm, his venture into directing is an area he’s only briefly explored. When asked by Popverse’s video producer Veronica Valencia if he envisions directing again, Evans expressed a strong desire to return to the director’s chair but emphasized the importance of finding the right project.
“Yeah, absolutely,” Evans said. “I directed a film about 10 years ago, and it was a really wonderful experience that I loved. But you learn how demanding it is—it takes so much of you. The months of preparation, the months of post-production—it really needs to be a script that consumes you. It has to be something you wake up thinking about and the last thing on your mind before you sleep.”
Evans was referring to his 2014 directorial debut, Before We Go, a romantic drama in which he also starred alongside Alice Eve. The film tells the story of two strangers who meet after becoming stranded in New York City and quickly develop a connection. Reflecting on the experience, Evans described how he approached the project with enthusiasm, despite the challenges presented by the script.
“I was just so eager to get the chance,” Evans said. “I took a script that was kind of like a little broken bird. I thought, ‘I can fix it.'”
Although Before We Go didn’t achieve the critical acclaim Evans might have hoped for, with reviewers offering mixed opinions despite praising the chemistry between Evans and Eve, the experience hasn’t deterred him from pursuing directing again. In fact, he remains on the lookout for a new project that better aligns with his vision.
“I’ve been looking,” Evans added. “Unfortunately, I’m not much of a writer, so I rely on finding something already written. But great scripts aren’t easy to come by—they’re not just lying around. So I’m always searching because I really loved the experience. But now I understand the level of passion needed to take on such a project.”
Evans’ commitment to finding the right script highlights his dedication to directing and his desire to make a meaningful return to the role. As he continues his search, fans and the film industry alike will undoubtedly be eager to see what project he chooses to bring to life next.
