Tyler Perry’s ‘Divorce in the Black’ Boosts U.S. Prime Video Subscriptions More Than Any Other Amazon MGM Film.
Tyler Perry’s new film, “Divorce in the Black,” has achieved notable success on Amazon Prime Video. Nielsen reports that the movie garnered over 498 million minutes of viewing within its first four days. Amazon confirms that “Divorce in the Black” has driven more new U.S. Prime Video subscriptions than any other film produced by Amazon MGM Studios.
The film debuted strongly on Nielsen’s Top 10 streaming chart, ranking as the No. 3 movie for the week of July 8-14. It trailed only Netflix’s “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” and Paramount+’s “If.” Given the film’s nearly 2.5-hour runtime, its 498 million minutes of viewing translates to approximately 3.5 million views. The movie’s performance is also tracked by Luminate, which reported that “Divorce in the Black” had 93.2 million minutes watched during the week of July 26 to August 1, its third week on the platform. (Note: Variety and Luminate are both owned by Penske Media Corp.)
Starring Meagan Good as Ava, the film follows a young bank professional facing a troubled marriage. When her husband Dallas, played by Cory Hardrict, requests a divorce, Ava is initially heartbroken and determined to save the marriage. However, she soon discovers Dallas’ deceitful actions that have damaged their relationship and obstructed her chance at true love, according to the film’s official description. Perry wrote and directed the film as part of his four-picture deal with Amazon Studios and also served as a producer alongside Good, Angi Bones, Will Areu, and Dianne Ashford.
Amazon did not disclose specific subscriber numbers or identify which previous Amazon MGM film had previously led in subscriber growth. The studio had earlier highlighted “Road House” as a major success, with over 50 million global viewers in its first two weeks. A sequel to the Jake Gyllenhaal-led remake is in development, as announced by Amazon MGM Studios chief Jennifer Salke at the company’s first upfront presentation in May.
