In the midst of the Deadpool & Wolverine film’s production, which was extensively shot in real-world locations, leaks from the set were inevitable. Despite this, Marvel Studios successfully kept Chris Evans’ cameo under wraps until the movie’s release.
Aaron Stanford, who returned as Pyro from the X-Men series, spoke with ComicBook about how Evans’ appearance was kept hidden. He explained that the secrecy was due to the film’s complex shooting schedule. “We filmed that scene in a vast, Mad Max-like wasteland, which was challenging to secure. Photographers managed to capture images from a distance with long lenses because it was an open area,” Stanford said. “The leak occurred because the paparazzi were positioned far away, trying to capture any spoilers they could.”
Stanford further clarified that Evans’ involvement was shielded by the filming schedule. “The scene was split into two parts: before and after a strike. We filmed the initial part on the first day I worked, which was also when Chris filmed. After the strike, we resumed shooting the rest of the scene. Unfortunately, that was when the paparazzi appeared, but Chris was not present.”
Evans Completed His Scenes Swiftly
Chris Evans’ role as Johnny Storm/Human Torch, a character he first portrayed in 20th Century Fox’s Fantastic Four (2005) and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007), was kept secret partly due to his efficient work. Ryan Reynolds, the film’s star, revealed that Evans finished his scenes in just two days. “We’re incredibly grateful to have Chris on board,” Reynolds noted. “He achieved so much in just a short time, which was impressive.”
Director Shawn Levy praised Evans for his quick and effective performance. “We anticipated that Chris might need several takes for his fast-paced dialogue,” Levy said. “However, he nailed it in just two takes, delivering lines that had us laughing uncontrollably. Chris clearly enjoyed the role, and his performance as Johnny Storm was distinctively different from his Captain America role.”
After the film’s release, Reynolds expressed his gratitude to Evans on social media. “Thank you, Chris Evans. Some of my best theater moments have been thanks to him,” Reynolds wrote. “He’s one of those stars who exceeds expectations. People have high standards for him, and he lives up to them. Chris is simply the best.”
