More than 30 years after its release, Pretty Woman, one of the most iconic romantic comedies ever made, is experiencing a resurgence in popularity on Max. The 1990 classic, starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, has recently climbed into the platform’s top 10 most popular movies, securing the #5 spot.
The film is currently outperformed by both Grown Ups movies, which have maintained a steady presence in the Max top 5 for several weeks, and the Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law collaboration, Sherlock Holmes. Despite its age, Pretty Woman surpasses other popular titles like Hercules, featuring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as the legendary Greek demigod, and the animated favorite How to Train Your Dragon, which has a live-action adaptation in the works.
On Rotten Tomatoes, Pretty Woman holds a 65% rating from critics and a slightly higher 68% approval from general audiences, reflecting its enduring appeal.
The screenplay for Pretty Woman was penned by J.F. Lawton, whose career highlights include the action-thriller Under Siege starring Steven Seagal and Tommy Lee Jones, the sci-fi action film Chain Reaction with Keanu Reeves and Morgan Freeman, and the martial arts mystery thriller DOA: Dead or Alive featuring Jaime Pressly and Devon Aoki. The film was directed by Garry Marshall, who passed away in 2016 at the age of 81. Marshall, who also made a brief appearance in the film as the Bum Tour Guide, had a distinguished career collaborating with stars like Sarah Jessica Parker, Jennifer Aniston, and Lindsay Lohan on various projects.
