The upcoming film “Deadpool & Wolverine” is set to be a significant milestone in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). It will introduce both Deadpool and Wolverine into the MCU, and as Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has mentioned, it will also usher in a new era of mutants within the franchise.
With the X-Men confirmed to join the MCU in a forthcoming live-action reboot, the big question is: Who will be their first major adversary? While there is much speculation, recent rumors hint that Wolverine might face some dark challenges ahead.
A few months back, reports emerged that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was in talks for a role in the MCU. Around this time, his production company, Seven Bucks Productions, secured a deal with Disney. This partnership opens the door for Johnson to take on significant roles within various Disney projects.
One rumor gaining traction is that Johnson might be involved in the X-Men reboot. Fans are speculating that he could portray Apocalypse, one of the most powerful villains in the X-Men universe.
But what does this mean for Wolverine? The storyline from “X-Men ’97” Season 1 could potentially influence the MCU narrative. In that series, Wolverine finds himself in dire straits after Magneto strips him of his adamantium skeleton. Deprived of the metal, Wolverine’s healing ability weakens, revealing his bone claws and causing his body to regress into a more primal, feral state. This not only debilitates him physically but also plunges him into a deep psychological struggle.
As the story progresses, Wolverine encounters Apocalypse, who offers him a way to regain his strength. In the “The Twelve” comic storyline, Apocalypse captures Wolverine and re-bonds the adamantium to his skeleton, intending to turn him into his Horseman of Death. Although Wolverine resists this transformation, he realizes that allowing Sabretooth to become Death would be an even greater danger. In a battle with Sabretooth, Wolverine secures the role of Horseman and regains his adamantium skeleton and claws.
This plot is one of the most significant in Wolverine’s comic history, and bringing it to the MCU would undoubtedly be a thrilling experience for fans.
