The Democratic National Convention kicks off tonight in Chicago, with several prominent figures, including comedian-actress Mindy Kaling and actor Kerry Washington, confirmed as hosts. Other hosts include political commentator Ana Navarro and actor Tony Goldwyn, The Hill reported.
According to organizers, each celebrity will take on hosting duties for one night of the four-day event. They will guide both in-person attendees and television viewers through the convention’s programs.
Tony Goldwyn will host the first night on Monday, followed by Ana Navarro on Tuesday, Mindy Kaling on Wednesday, and Kerry Washington on Thursday.
CNN initially reported the selection of these entertainment hosts. The organizers chose them due to their previous endorsements of Democratic Party candidates.
Tony Goldwyn, known for his role as the president in the ABC drama “Scandal,” is also an active Democratic supporter. He backed Hillary Clinton during her 2016 presidential campaign.
Mindy Kaling, famous for her roles in “The Office” and Disney’s “Inside Out,” has frequently appeared alongside Vice President Kamala Harris. In 2020, Kaling participated in a virtual Hollywood campaign event hosted by then-Senator Harris in support of Biden’s presidential run. In 2019, Kaling and Harris appeared together on YouTube, cooking masala dosa and discussing their shared Indian heritage.
Ana Navarro, a Republican strategist and co-host of “The View,” has increasingly aligned with the Democratic Party, particularly since Donald Trump’s rise in politics.
Kerry Washington, another former “Scandal” star, founded the political activism organization ‘Influence Change,’ which encourages celebrities to promote civil activism. She also opened the third night of the Democratic National Convention in 2020. Earlier this year, Washington joined forces with former Representative Adam Kinzinger as co-chairs of an advisory council for Power the Polls, aiming to recruit poll workers for the November elections.
President Biden will deliver the opening remarks on Monday, while Senator Harris will give her acceptance speech for the presidential nomination on Thursday, concluding the convention.
The convention, themed “For the People, For Our Future,” is expected to attract nearly 50,000 visitors, including about 4,000 delegates. Although the official schedule has not been fully released, it has been confirmed that both President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden will speak on Monday.
