Johnny Depp’s second film as a director, “Modi — Three Days on the Wings of Madness,” will debut at the San Sebastian Film Festival next month.
The movie stars Riccardo Scamarcio as the renowned Italian painter Amedeo Modigliani and will be featured in the festival’s out-of-competition section. The film’s synopsis describes it as “a tale of art, love, and rejection,” focusing on a chaotic 72-hour period set against the backdrop of World War I-era Paris. It also features Stephen Graham, Al Pacino, and Antonia Desplat.
This film marks Depp’s return to directing after his 1997 debut with “The Brave,” which received critical criticism. It is also one of Depp’s first major projects since his high-profile court case with his ex-wife Amber Heard in 2022. Depp sued Heard for defamation after she accused him of domestic abuse. He won the case, but the controversy has affected his career. Depp made a comeback at the Cannes Film Festival in 2023 with the premiere of Maïwenn’s “Jeanne du Barry.” Although “Modi” was speculated to premiere at the Venice Film Festival this year, it was not included in the lineup.
In a statement released with photos from the “Modi” set, Depp described the experience of making the film as “incredibly fulfilling and transformative.” He expressed his gratitude to the cast, crew, and producers for their dedication and creativity. Depp specifically thanked Al Pacino, who encouraged him to make the film, and acknowledged Pacino’s contribution to the project. He concluded by celebrating the collaborative spirit of independent filmmaking and expressed excitement about sharing the story with audiences.
