Thangalaan, the latest film starring Vikram, is facing significant challenges at the box office. After its second weekend, the film has grossed approximately ₹68 crore worldwide, and projections suggest it may finish with a total gross of under ₹75 crore. This outcome is disappointing for Vikram, who has been experiencing a rough patch in his career.
In its second weekend, Thangalaan collected around ₹5 crore, reflecting a steep decline of nearly 80% from its first weekend. The film’s performance was particularly poor in its original Tamil version, which saw an 85% drop in collections. However, the Telugu dubbed version held up better, with a decrease of only 50%.
As of now, the film has earned approximately ₹52 crore at the Indian box office. Internationally, it has grossed around USD 1.90 million (approximately ₹16 crore). The total worldwide gross stands at ₹68 crore, indicating a troubling trend for the film’s overall performance.
In Tamil Nadu, the film generated just ₹2.75 crore during its second weekend, bringing its total in the state to ₹35 crore. Thangalaan is expected to fall short of Demonte Colony 2, which is projected to collect around ₹40 crore in Tamil Nadu, despite Thangalaan having a much larger opening on its first day. While the Telugu version maintained a decent hold, the overall collections remain too low to make a significant impact.
This marks another setback for Vikram, whose recent films have not performed well. Aside from the successful Ponniyin Selvam films, which benefited from their established intellectual property, Vikram’s last hit was Irumugan in 2016. Since then, he has released five films, all of which have failed to make a strong impression at the box office.
