Jenna Ortega, now 21, began her acting career at the young age of seven. Known for her role as Wednesday Addams, Ortega recently shared her thoughts on the challenges of being a child actor. With her upcoming role in Beetlejuice 2, she took time to reflect on her early experiences in Hollywood.
In a recent interview with The New York Times, Ortega described child acting as “strange.” She acknowledged the fears her parents faced when they decided to place her in an adult-dominated industry. Ortega noted that if she had remained in Coachella Valley, her personality and character might have developed differently.
The actress explained how her early experiences shaped her perspective on life. She mentioned that many child actors share a “secret little language” that connects them through their unique experiences in the industry.
Ortega praised her parents for maintaining a balanced life for her. They ensured she had time for school, friends, and typical childhood activities. She expressed gratitude for their insistence on her achieving straight A’s, attending public school, and getting enough rest before taking on roles. “Kids aren’t supposed to work like that,” she emphasized, highlighting that childhood should be free from adult pressures.
She also pointed out that the maturity often seen in child actors can mask their true age. The demanding schedules and responsibilities can lead them to live lives that are not typical for their years.
Looking back on her childhood fame, Ortega admitted that while she wouldn’t change anything, there are moments when her parents express regret about her early career.
“There are times that my parents regret it,” she said. Nevertheless, she remains thankful for the lessons learned during those years, which have given her valuable insights into the filmmaking process.
Ortega feels she grew up quickly in the business, allowing her to relate to older actresses, such as Winona Ryder, with whom she stars in Beetlejuice 2. She described Ryder as warm, sweet, and wonderful to work with.
As Ortega continues to balance the demands of her celebrity status with her personal life, she maintains a positive outlook for the future.
Her sensitivity, reflection, and determination suggest she is ready to face whatever challenges lie ahead.
