Glenn Close has expressed deep admiration for Katharine Hepburn, highlighting the legendary actress’s authenticity and strong sense of self. In a recent interview with PEOPLE, Close, 77, discussed how Hepburn’s individuality inspired her to pursue acting.
Close recalled a significant moment from 1973 when she was a senior at the College of William and Mary in Virginia. While painting theater scenery, she watched Hepburn’s rare appearance on The Dick Cavett Show. Hepburn’s powerful statement, “No regrets, no regrets,” resonated with Close and left a lasting impression.
Hepburn’s confidence and genuine self-expression motivated Close to take action. The day after the show, she approached the head of her theater department and requested to audition for several roles. This bold move led to her landing her first acting job that fall.
The influence of Hepburn extended beyond Close’s career. Her story illustrates the profound impact of being true to oneself and how it can inspire others. Close also expressed admiration for Audrey Hepburn, noting their shared Connecticut roots and the fact that both of their fathers were doctors.
Reflecting on her career, Close shared that she went directly from college to her first Broadway job after graduation. Over the next six years, she focused on theater before making her film debut in The World According to Garp. Since then, she has enjoyed a successful career in both theater and film.
Close fondly remembered a meeting with Katharine Hepburn after paying tribute to her at the 1990 Kennedy Center Honors. During a television interview, Hepburn stood out in a black raincoat, white shirt, black pants, and polished black Reeboks, while others wore elegant gowns. Close admired Hepburn’s ability to exude style and confidence in such a simple outfit.
In the interview, Close also discussed a letter she received from a hero, calling it “the most fantastic letter.” She described how the letter’s words impacted her, emphasizing the challenges and rewards of acting. Close advised aspiring actors to develop resilience and prepare for disappointments and rejections in the industry.
Currently, Close stars in The Deliverance, alongside Mo’Nique, Andra Day, and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor. The film is now in theaters and will be available on Netflix starting August 30. Additionally, Close will appear in Brothers, featuring Josh Brolin and Peter Dinklage, which will be released in theaters on October 10 and on Prime Video on October 17.
