“Alien: Romulus” has emerged as the second highest-grossing Hollywood film of 2024 at the Chinese box office, following a strong second-weekend performance. The sci-fi movie collected RMB140 million ($19.7 million) from Friday to Sunday, a favorable result compared to its $26.2 million opening weekend. Its cumulative earnings now stand at RMB523 million ($73.7 million) since its release on August 16.
Among Hollywood imports, “Alien: Romulus” trails only the Chinese-backed “Godzilla v Kong,” which amassed $134 million. These include “Kung Fu Panda 4” ($52 million), “Despicable Me 4” ($56 million), “Dune 2” ($49.7 million), and “Inside Out 2” ($48 million).
IMAX reported that the film earned $2.75 million on its screens over the latest weekend, accounting for approximately 16% of its total China box office. After ten days, “Alien: Romulus” has grossed $11.6 million on IMAX screens.
The Chinese drama “The Hedgehog” opened in second place, earning RMB74.4 million ($10.5 million). Directed by Gu Changwei, the film is a friendship story featuring popular actors Ge You and Karry Wang, a member of the boy band TFBoys.
Another new Chinese release, the crime drama “Untouchable,” came in third with RMB73.4 million ($10.3 million). The film is directed by Wang Daqing and stars Shen Teng, Zhang Yuqi, and Jack Kao.
The Chinese crime thriller “Go for Broke” slipped to fourth place in its second weekend, earning $7.1 million and bringing its ten-day total to $33.4 million. The Japanese animated film “Detective Conan: The Million Dollar Pentagram” added $4.8 million in its second weekend, accumulating $29.2 million after ten days.
The Thai comedy-drama “How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies” opened outside the top five, estimated to have earned $4.4 million over its first three days. The nationwide box office total for the weekend was $70.8 million, increasing the year-to-date total to $4.62 billion, which is more than 21% below the equivalent figure in 2023.
