Prime Video has announced the release of “Christmas in Lagos,” a holiday romantic comedy directed by Jade Osiberu, known for her work on “Gangs of Lagos.” The film features chart-topping Afrobeats sensation Ayra Starr and a star-studded cast of Nigerian pop and screen stars.
“Christmas in Lagos” is set to be released in December and marks the only original production to come out of Osiberu’s multi-title pact with Prime Video, which earlier this year announced a pause on its original productions in Africa. Osiberu has since formally exited the deal.
The film follows four friends navigating friendship, love, and loss during the festive “Detty December” season in Lagos. The ensemble cast includes Teniola A. Aladese, Shalom C. Obiago, Rayxia Ojo, and Shaffy Bello, with appearances from Afrobeats stars such as Ayra Starr, Adekunle Gold, Wurld, and Liya.
Osiberu described the film as capturing the “magical” phenomenon of Detty December, when Lagos transforms into a month-long celebration with parties, concerts, and weddings. The director aimed to authentically represent the energy of Lagos during this period, incorporating Afrobeats music throughout the film.
Despite the abrupt pause in Prime Video’s African original productions, Osiberu remains optimistic about the future of Nigeria’s Nollywood industry. She praised Nollywood’s resilience, noting that it has consistently grown over the years and will continue to thrive regardless of external factors.
“Christmas in Lagos” promises to be a vibrant and authentic representation of the holiday season in Nigeria’s largest city, showcasing the country’s rich culture and music scene.
