Netflix’s highly anticipated sequel, “The Platform 2,” directed by Basque filmmaker Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia, will have its world premiere at the San Sebastián International Film Festival in September. The movie will close the festival’s Culinary Zinema section.
“The Platform,” the first installment of the dystopian thriller, was a major hit for Netflix, ranking as the 5th most-watched non-English film on the platform with 82.8 million views. The film’s unique premise, set in a vertical prison where food is lowered from the upper levels to the lower ones, creating a brutal survival scenario, struck a chord with audiences.
“The Platform 2” will feature new characters played by Milena Smit (“The Snow Girl”) and Hovik Keuchkerian (“Money Heist”), alongside returning cast members Natalia Tena (“Game of Thrones”) and Óscar Jaenada (“Luis Miguel: The Series”). Gaztelu-Urrutia will once again direct, with producers Carlos Juarez and Raquel Perrea from Basque Film.
The sequel will continue to explore themes of social inequality and the human capacity for cruelty. According to the synopsis, “As a mysterious leader imposes their rule in the Platform, a new resident becomes embroiled in the battle against this controversial method to fight the brutal feeding system. But when eating from the wrong plate becomes a death sentence, how far would you be willing to go to save your life?”
The San Sebastián festival will also feature other notable Netflix productions, including Maite Alberdi’s fiction debut “In Her Place” and Diego Lerman’s “The Man Who Loved UFOs” in the main competition.
Culinary Zinema, the festival’s section dedicated to food-related films, will open with Paco Plaza’s documentary “Mugaritz.” The film focuses on the renowned restaurant of the same name, located just outside San Sebastián, which challenges diners to rethink their culinary experiences.
“The Platform 2” is set to premiere on Netflix on October 4th, 2024.
