Irish television production company Great Island has announced new deals with writers Richie O’Connell and Joshua Kenny to develop two original series.
O’Connell will create Headcase, a drama-comedy that follows a troubled street artist and his eclectic group of friends as they search for deeper meaning in life. The series will feature characters such as a former boxing champion sister and an agoraphobic friend. O’Connell plans to address mental health issues relevant to contemporary Cork, drawing from his own experiences.
Meanwhile, Kenny will work on People Do Bad Things, a story about well-meaning individuals living on the fringes of society. The plot centers around Grace, whose suicide attempt is interrupted by a young thief named Jack. After catching him breaking into her home, Grace decides to help him rob her, leading her to become involved with a gang of criminals. Throughout the series, Grace influences the gang to use their skills for good.
Great Island, based in Cork, specializes in producing a variety of television content, including animation, drama, and unscripted formats. Both Headcase and People Do Bad Things will receive development funding from Screen Ireland.
Mark Kenny, CEO of Great Island, expressed excitement about collaborating with O’Connell and Kenny. “We are thrilled to announce our partnership with these talented writers,” he said. “A significant amount of effort has gone into refining these narratives for screen adaptation. We are grateful to Richie and Joshua for placing their trust in us. Both Headcase and People Do Bad Things are authentic Cork stories that resonate universally. This quality is something we seek in all our projects. Thanks to Screen Ireland, we are excited to share these narratives with audiences worldwide.”
