Eminem triumphed at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, taking home the awards for Best Hip-Hop and Best Visual Effects for his hit single “Houdini” from his latest album,
The Death of Slim Shady. This victory adds to his impressive collection of awards and sets new records.
The rapper secured the Best Hip-Hop award by outperforming notable nominees, including Drake featuring Sexyy Red and SZA with “Rich Baby Daddy,” GloRilla’s “Yeah Glo!,” Gunna’s “fukumean,” Megan Thee Stallion’s “BOA,” and Travis Scott featuring Playboi Carti’s “FE!N.” In addition to Best Hip-Hop, “Houdini” also won the award for Best Visual Effects.
With this win, Eminem, also known as Slim Shady, has now earned 15 MTV Video Music Awards, making him the most awarded solo male artist in VMA history, surpassing Peter Gabriel. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the 51-year-old rapper holds the record for the most wins by a rapper and is only behind Madonna, who has 71 nominations, as the second most nominated artist ever.
This year, Eminem received nominations in eight categories, including Best Hip-Hop, Best Visual Effects, Video of the Year, Song of the Summer, and the VMAs Most Iconic Performance for his legendary 2000 medley. In that performance, he famously appeared with hundreds of look-alikes as he performed “The Real Slim Shady” and “The Way I Am.” In 2024, he recreated this iconic moment during his performance of “Houdini.”
The music video for “Houdini” pays homage to his earlier hit “Without Me,” featuring Slim Shady returning from the 2000s through a portal in 2024. He dons a Robin costume, climbs a wall, and refers to himself as “Rap Boy.” The video also includes appearances from Dr. Dre, Pete Davidson, 50 Cent, and Eminem’s three children—Hailie, Alaina, and Stevie. Fans can look forward to the surprise release of The Death of Slim Shady: Expanded Mourner’s Edition on Friday the 13th, as announced by Eminem on social media.
Eminem opened the show with a powerful medley from his latest album. Embracing his 2000s persona, he performed “Houdini” alongside a group of look-alikes dressed in black tees and blonde wigs. He also delivered an emotional performance of “Somebody Save Me,” a track that addresses his struggles with addiction, family, and mental health, featuring Jelly Roll’s song “Save Me.”
The event showcased Eminem’s enduring legacy in the music industry, highlighting his continued relevance and artistry.
