Oprah Winfrey recently engaged with fans on social media, answering questions about her favorite fictional character to have lunch with. In a post on Threads, she shared her thoughts on various topics, including her preferred reading spots and the most comfortable blankets.
When asked which fictional character she would like to dine with, Oprah chose Pecola Breedlove from Toni Morrison’s 1970 novel The Bluest Eye. Pecola is a young Black girl who dreams of having blue eyes. Oprah expressed her desire to tell Pecola, “You don’t need blue eyes because you’re beautiful just the way you are.”
In addition to her lunch companion, Oprah discussed her ideal reading environment. She mentioned that she enjoys reading on a sofa by the fireplace, wrapped in a cozy cashmere blanket, although she would also accept cotton or wool. She recommended A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle as a book everyone should read at least once in their lifetime.
On September 10, Oprah announced that her 107th book club selection would be Tell Me Everything by Elizabeth Strout. This novel features beloved characters Lucy Barton and Olive Kitteridge, returning to a Maine town shaken by a murder investigation. Oprah’s Book Club began in 1996 as a segment on The Oprah Winfrey Show and has since highlighted numerous influential books. In 2024, her selections include Familiaris by David Wroblewski, Long Island by Colm Tóibín, and The Many Lives of Mama Love by Lara Love Hardin.
In 2023, Oprah co-authored a self-help book titled Build the Life You Want: The Art and Science of Getting Happier with Harvard professor Arthur C. Brooks.
