Paul Rudd has surprised fans once again with his appearance in season 4 of “Only Murders in the Building.” However, this time he’s not playing his character Ben Glenroy, who died in the previous season, but rather his stunt double, Glen Stubbins, complete with an Irish accent.
As the trio of Charles (Steve Martin), Mabel (Selena Gomez), and Oliver (Martin Short) investigate Sazz’s (Jane Lynch) murder in the latest season, they cross paths with the stuntman, whose Irish accent is not quite convincing.
Glen’s character helps the show’s leads uncover crucial information about Sazz. When the trio visits the bar she and other stunt performers frequented, they receive an unwelcoming reception from the patrons, who blame them for her death and demand they leave.
Glen then approaches the group on the street and offers to provide information to Charles in exchange for a role in the “Only Murders in the Building” film. He leads them to Dr. Maggie, a chiropractor who treats Charles.
During this encounter, Charles learns that Sazz was planning to retire and felt she was in a one-sided relationship with someone close to her.
Dr. Maggie’s treatment causes Charles to have visions of a bleeding and injured Sazz telling him she’s going to “paradise.” This leads Charles to realize the one-sided relationship Sazz mentioned was their friendship.
Recognizing the importance of their friendship to Sazz, Charles decides to give her a proper sendoff. This also explains why the bar patrons were not welcoming, as Sazz had never received the traditional stunt performer’s funeral.
Glen assists Charles in setting up a funeral for Sazz at the bar. As Charles lies on a pool table representing her body, the patrons break prop bottles on his forehead. However, when it’s Glen’s turn, he uses a real bottle, angering the others. In the ensuing chaos, Charles has a flashback of Sazz fantasizing about her retirement, and Glen points out this is exactly how Sazz would have wanted her wake to be.
Rudd’s return to the series is always a delight for fans, as he remains one of their favorites from the show’s previous seasons. While his latest appearance was well-received, many also commented on his humorous Irish accent.
The cast recently announced that “Only Murders in the Building” will return for a fifth season on Hulu.
