Emerald Fennell, the Academy Award-winning filmmaker, is set to direct a new adaptation of Emily Brontë’s classic novel “Wuthering Heights.” The film will feature Academy Award nominee Margot Robbie and BAFTA nominee Jacob Elordi in lead roles as Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff, respectively.
Production company LuckyChap, co-founded by Robbie, will produce the film. Fennell will write, direct, and produce the project. This collaboration marks the third time Fennell and LuckyChap have worked together, following their successful films “Promising Young Woman” and “Saltburn.” Fennell also appeared in the hit film “Barbie,” which Robbie produced and starred in.
“Wuthering Heights” is currently in pre-production, with filming scheduled to begin in the UK in 2025. Fennell announced her plans for the adaptation on social media in July.
She shared a graphic featuring a quote from the novel: “Be with me always – Take any form – Drive me mad.” At that time, it was revealed that she would be working again with MRC, the studio behind “Saltburn.”
With Robbie and Elordi on board, many key players from “Saltburn” are reuniting for this new project. Barry Keoghan, who starred in “Saltburn,” expressed interest in joining the cast as well. He praised Fennell’s work, stating, “Anything that Emerald puts her hands on, I’m there. She’s incredible.”
Robbie has previously highlighted Fennell’s unique storytelling style. In a January interview, she remarked on how Fennell immerses viewers in her narratives. “She gets in your brain and she kind of taps into the most depraved parts of it,” Robbie said.
Fans have been eager to see Robbie star in one of Fennell’s films.
Carey Mulligan received an Oscar nomination for her role in “Promising Young Woman,” a performance that Robbie admired but found challenging to step aside from. Elordi also took a leading role in “Saltburn,” alongside Mulligan and Rosamund Pike.
Robbie’s next project after “Barbie” is Kogonada’s film “A Big Bold Beautiful Journey,” set for release in May 2025. LuckyChap’s latest film, “My Old Ass,” is currently in theaters.
The company has also ventured into live theater with the off-Broadway play “The Big Gay Jamboree.”
Elordi recently gained recognition for his role as Elvis Presley in Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla.” He will also appear in upcoming films such as “The Narrow Road to the Deep North” and Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation of “Frankenstein.”
Robbie is represented by Entertainment 360, CAA, Aran Michael Management, attorney Jeff Bernstein, and Narrative. Elordi is represented by Gersh. Fennell is represented by UTA and Entertainment 360.
Deadline was the first to report on Robbie and Elordi’s involvement in this highly anticipated adaptation of “Wuthering Heights.”
