Transatlantic distribution company Pink Parrot Media has secured global rights to the animated feature “Black Butterflies,” directed by David Baute. The film has gained attention following a successful summer festival run, including its world premiere in the Annecy Contrechamp competition.
Pink Parrot is currently engaging with distributors worldwide and has already finalized a deal with Sideral Cinema in Spain. This company previously distributed this year’s Spanish Oscars submission, “Saturn Returns.” “Black Butterflies” is set to hit Spanish theaters on December 5, following its domestic premiere on October 4 at the Sitges Film Festival. Baute will be present at the Catalan screening alongside screenwriter Yaiza Berrocal, composer Diego Navarro, production designer and animation director Pepe Sánchez, and director of photography María Pulido.
The film will also be featured at upcoming festivals such as Animasyros, DocsMx, and the Manchester Animation Festival. “Black Butterflies” is a 2D-animated documentary that draws inspiration from Baute’s live-action film “Climate Exodus,” released in 2020. The new film tells the personal stories of women climate refugees from Kenya, India, and the Caribbean. Baute and Berrocal collaborated with art director María Pulido and production designer José Sanchez Alonso to weave these narratives into a cohesive feature film that carries a strong message. The film includes an original song by Grammy-winning Panamanian artist Ruben Blades, enhancing its commercial appeal.
“Black Butterflies” is produced by Spain’s Ikiru Films and Tinglado Film, in collaboration with Catalan companies Anangu Group and CCMA, as well as Panama’s Tunche Films.
The project received financial backing from Spanish public broadcaster RTVE, state TV operator 3Cat in Catalonia, Public Television of the Canary Islands, and Mogambo. It also received funding from Spain’s Ministry of Culture-ICAA and support from ICEC-Department of Culture-Generalitat de Catalunya, along with assistance from the government of the Canary Islands and the Island Council of Tenerife.
Edmon Roch, producer at Ikiru Films, expressed excitement about partnering with Pink Parrot Media. He stated, “It’s a luxury to start our journey with a sales agent with the experience, detail, and passion of Pink Parrot Media.” He added that they are thrilled to have Sideral Cinema as their distributor in Spain.
Tania Pinto Da Cunha, VP and partner at Pink Parrot Media, praised “Black Butterflies,” calling it “a striking and moving story that raises social awareness of climate change.” She emphasized that the film serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of global warming and highlights the importance of solidarity in an ever-changing world.
Roberto Butragueño, CEO of Sideral Cinema, expressed pride in sharing this unique film with Spanish audiences. He noted its extraordinary quality and relevance to current issues while looking forward to continuing collaboration with Ikiru after their successful experience with “Saturn Returns.”
