Ellen DeGeneres has opened up about the emotional toll that allegations of a toxic workplace on her talk show took on her mental health. In her latest Netflix special, Ellen DeGeneres: For Your Approval, she reflects on her career and the public accusations that have affected her deeply.
DeGeneres, who hosted The Ellen DeGeneres Show for 19 seasons from 2003 to 2022, addressed the workplace allegations in her special, which premiered on Netflix on September 24. The accusations first surfaced in July 2020, when BuzzFeed News reported that her show fostered a toxic work environment. Although DeGeneres apologized publicly during the final season of her show, she had not previously shared the extent of how these claims impacted her.
“I’m happy not being a boss, a brand, or a billboard—just a person,” DeGeneres said during her performance. She emphasized that she is a multifaceted individual with various feelings and emotions.
The comedian acknowledged the difficulties she faced during this period. “I have OCD and ADD. I’m honest, generous, sensitive, and thoughtful,” she shared. “But I’m also tough, impatient, demanding, and direct. I’m a strong woman.”
Her candid remarks received cheers and a standing ovation from the audience. DeGeneres expressed gratitude and pride in who she has become, despite the challenges.
Reflecting on her time in the public eye, DeGeneres noted that being a public figure subjects one to constant scrutiny. She quoted the saying, “What other people think of me is none of my business,” highlighting the lack of control one has over public perception. However, she emphasized that understanding one’s own truth is what truly matters.
DeGeneres discussed how comedy makes her more aware of public opinion. She explained that if people like you, you are accepted; if not, you are cast aside. She has spent much of her life trying to make others happy and has been overly concerned with their opinions.
The comedian found the accusations of being mean-spirited particularly distressing. The thought of anyone believing she was unkind devastated her for a long time. However, as she has aged, DeGeneres claims to have gained perspective. “After a lifetime of caring, I simply cannot anymore,” she stated. She acknowledged that she faces a choice between being remembered as mean or beloved—and she chooses the latter.
Ellen DeGeneres: For Your Approval is now available for streaming on Netflix. The special offers fans an intimate look at DeGeneres’ personal reflections following the end of her talk show era.
