Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Alyssa Sutherland lead the cast of “The Room Below,” a psychological creature thriller currently filming in Sydney, Australia.
Written and directed by Kurt Martin, known for “Moon Rock for Monday,” the film is produced by Lunar Pictures, based in Byron Bay.
In “The Room Below,” Mia, an expectant mother and successful children’s author, experiences strange events in her home after a boy who resembles her deceased son goes missing. As Mia’s grief deepens, her odd behavior draws the attention of a retired detective determined to solve the case of the missing boy.
Rhys Meyers, an Irish actor, has appeared in several notable films and TV series, including “Velvet Goldmine,” “The Tudors,” and “Dracula.”
Sutherland is recognized for her roles in the TV series “Vikings” and the film “Evil Dead Rise.” The cast also includes Bobby Gilchrist from “Shapeless” and Gilbert Bradman from “Transfusion.”
Kurt Martin described “The Room Below” as a “deeply intense psychological thriller about grief, guilt, and obsession,” featuring a unique creature that enhances the horror elements. He expressed excitement about working with his talented cast and crew.
Martin, originally trained as a lawyer, has directed and produced several short films. His feature debut, “Moon Rock for Monday,” was released by EOne’s Seville International and screened at multiple festivals worldwide. The film earned him an AACTA nomination for Best Indie Film in 2021.
“The Room Below” is produced by Jim Robison for Lunar Pictures, Chris Chard for CME, and Ty Linegar for MIK Studio. Executive producers include Marc Furmie, William Ramsey, Colin Bates, Adam Callen, Samuel Levine, Roy Scott Macfarland, Clement Dunn, Emma Comley, and actress Jaime King. Alexandra Taussig serves as a producer consultant.
The film is being made in association with CME, Valecroft, and MIK Studio, with support from Hooligan Dreamers, Tetrad Studios, and Monster Pictures. The creature design is handled by the award-winning special effects studio Make Up Effects Group.
