In a heartwarming gesture, Johnny Depp made a surprise visit to the Donostia University Hospital in San Sebastián, Spain, on September 26, while attending the San Sebastián Film Festival. The actor, dressed as his iconic character Captain Jack Sparrow from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, brought joy to young patients during his visit.
Depp engaged with children in the Pediatrics and Oncology wards, playing games and sharing laughter. He remained in character throughout the visit, creating a memorable experience for the kids. The hospital shared photos of the visit on social media, expressing their gratitude for Depp’s time and energy. “From all the staff of the Donostia University Hospital, we would like to express our infinite gratitude to Johnny Depp for his time, his support and his energy,” they wrote.
This is not the first time Depp has brightened the day of young patients. He has previously visited children’s hospitals around the world, including locations in Vancouver, Paris, London, and Brisbane.
His dedication to uplifting children stems from a personal experience; his daughter Lily-Rose spent nine days in Great Ormond Street Hospital in London due to kidney failure caused by E. coli poisoning in 2007.
Reflecting on that difficult time, Depp noted how important it is for him to bring smiles to children facing health challenges.
Depp’s visit coincided with the debut of his new film Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness, which he directed. During a press conference at the festival on September 24, he discussed how he relates personally to the film’s subject, Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani. “Each has their story,” he said with a laugh. “I think we’ve all been through a number of things.” This comment alluded to his own recent legal battles.
In 2022, Depp was involved in a highly publicized defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard. Following the trial, Heard settled by paying Depp $1 million. She now lives quietly in Madrid with her daughter.
After the San Sebastián Film Festival, Depp is set to open an immersive exhibition titled A Bunch of Stuff in New York City on October 4. His continued engagement with fans and commitment to charitable causes highlight his resilience and dedication beyond his film career.
