Kris Kristofferson, the iconic country music singer-songwriter and star of “A Star Is Born,” passed away at the age of 88 on Saturday at his home in Maui, Hawaii. His family confirmed that he died peacefully, surrounded by loved ones. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
In a heartfelt statement, Kristofferson’s family expressed their sorrow:
“It is with a heavy heart that we share the news our husband/father/grandfather, Kris Kristofferson, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Sept. 28 at home. We’re all so blessed for our time with him. Thank you for loving him all these many years, and when you see a rainbow, know he’s smiling down at us all.” This message was shared on behalf of his wife, Lisa, his eight children—Tracy, Kris Jr., Casey, Jesse, Jody, John, Kelly, and Blake—and his seven grandchildren.
Kyle Young, CEO of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, praised Kristofferson’s belief in the power of creativity. He stated, “Kris Kristofferson believed to his core that creativity is God-given… He preached that a life of the mind gives voice to the soul.” Young highlighted how Kristofferson’s work resonated with many and honored values exemplified by his heroes, including Muhammad Ali and Hank Williams.
Kristofferson’s career began in the late 1960s when he wrote several classic country hits. His songs include “For the Good Times,” performed by Ray Price in 1970; “Sunday Morning Coming Down,” sung by Johnny Cash in 1970; and “Help Me Make It Through the Night,” which was popularized by Sammi Smith in 1971. His song “Me and Bobby McGee” became a posthumous No. 1 pop hit for Janis Joplin in 1971.
His first four albums with Monument Records showcased his raw singing style and poetic songwriting. The album Jesus Was a Capricorn (1972) featured the No. 1 country hit “Why Me” and topped the country LP chart. Throughout his career, Kristofferson won three Grammy Awards, including one for Best Country Song for “Help Me Make It Through the Night,” as well as two awards for duets with Rita Coolidge during their marriage from 1973 to 1980.
Kristofferson leaves behind a legacy as both a talented musician and a respected actor. His contributions to music and film will be remembered by fans and peers alike.
