Jaden Smith is set to release his new EP, 2024: A Case Study of the Long Term Effects of Young Love, on October 18. This upcoming project marks one of his most personal works to date.
The son of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith has been open about his life experiences and emotions through his music. His parents have provided unwavering support throughout his journey. Recently, Jada Pinkett Smith was among the first to share the music video for Jaden’s new song, “D.U.M.B.” Just a day later, Jaden took to Instagram to explain the song’s meaning, revealing that he created this project because he is feeling sad.
In his post, Jaden explained that “D.U.M.B.” stands for “Deep Underground Military Base,” a nod to his fan base known as MSFTS.
However, he emphasized that the song reflects his struggles with hurting loved ones and the challenges of self-discovery in today’s digital world. He wrote, “This song was written over a year ago and is dedicated to myself. I mean no disrespect with the lyrics; this is just my experience.”
Jaden continued, “I’ve always loved learning but I was never the smartest tool in the shed. If you ever feel D.U.M.B. while trying to discover yourself, just know you’re not alone.”
He humorously added a note about ensuring one’s “sunset cactus” doesn’t float away, hinting at the seasonal changes.
In an interview with Spin, the 26-year-old artist elaborated on his new music. He stated that feelings of sadness and loneliness inspired much of his work. “Those are the places where I can feel the most focus,” he said. He described 2024: A Case Study of the Long Term Effects of Young Love as a reflection on young love, including both mistakes and successes. He sees it as open-source material for others to explore and understand.
Jaden announced his EP on September 26, coinciding with his father Will’s 56th birthday. He shared a clip featuring a poster for the album inside a light booth, generating excitement among fans.
As he prepares for this release, Jaden Smith continues to navigate personal struggles while using music as an outlet for expression and healing.
