Universal Pictures is set to adapt the classic Sega video game series Shinobi into a feature film. The project will be directed by Sam Hargrave, known for his work on Extraction, and produced by Marc Platt.
While specific plot details are still under wraps, the Shinobi franchise follows Joe Musashi, a modern-day ninja who battles evil. The series first launched in 1987 as an arcade game and has since expanded to include 14 sequels, selling over five million copies worldwide.
Universal has recently found success with video game adaptations, including The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which grossed $1.4 billion, and Five Nights at Freddy’s, which earned $290 million. Sega has also seen success with the Sonic the Hedgehog films, both released by Paramount Pictures, which grossed $319 million and $405 million respectively. A third Sonic movie is scheduled for release in late 2024.
Ken Kobayashi, known for his work on Sunny and Move On, is writing the screenplay for Shinobi. Producers include Platt and Adam Siegel from Marc Platt Productions, Dmitri M. Johnson from Story Kitchen, and Toru Nakahara from Sega. Mike Goldberg will serve as executive producer alongside co-producer Timothy I. Stevenson. Universal’s Ryan Jones and Christine Sun will oversee the project.
Hargrave is also working on upcoming projects like Matchbox for Mattel Films and Skydance, as well as Kill Them All at Paramount Pictures. He is represented by WME and Goodman, Genow, Schenkman, Smelkinson & Christopher, LLP.
Kobayashi is represented by CAA, Redefine Entertainment, and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole LLP. Marc Platt Productions is represented by Jackoway Austen Tyerman Wertheimer Mandelbaum Morris. Story Kitchen is represented by WME and Pryor Cashman. Toru Nakahara negotiated on behalf of Sega.
As of now, there are no details on which specific Shinobi game the film will draw inspiration from. However, it is expected to create an original story while incorporating elements from the beloved franchise.
