Chris Pine has shared his uncertainty regarding his return for The Princess Diaries 3. However, he expressed excitement about the sequel’s official announcement.
Pine, who portrayed Nicholas Devereaux in The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, spoke about the film during an appearance on the Today show with Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager on October 8.
When asked if he would reunite with Anne Hathaway in the upcoming movie, Pine admitted that he has not been in discussions about the project and is unsure about returning to Genovia.
Despite the hosts emphasizing his importance to the franchise, Pine humorously suggested they contact Disney or CEO Bob Iger for answers. He stated, “Honestly, I don’t know anything about it. I think it’s fantastic.”
Pine did convey his enthusiasm for the film, believing it would be a great addition to the series. Anne Hathaway is set to reprise her role as Mia Thermopolis in this third installment, which comes 20 years after The Princess Diaries 2. The new film will be directed by Adele Lim, known for Crazy Rich Asians. Lim expressed her excitement about promoting themes of female empowerment, joy, and mentorship within the franchise.
Hathaway also shared her delight at Lim directing the film. Last year, she reassured fans eager for a sequel that patience is needed as production takes time.
It remains unclear whether Julie Andrews will return as Queen Clarisse Renaldi. Andrews’ portrayal in the first two films was beloved by fans.
The Princess Diaries franchise began in 2001 and follows Mia Thermopolis, a teenager from San Francisco who discovers she is the heir to a fictional kingdom. The first film chronicles her transformation from an ordinary girl to a princess, while the sequel focuses on her journey toward becoming a queen.
Both The Princess Diaries and The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement are available for streaming on Disney+.
