BTS member Jungkook was unable to perform at the Super Bowl halftime show due to his ongoing military enlistment. This absence has been labeled a “missed opportunity” by cultural critics.
Jungkook gained international fame with his debut solo album, GOLDEN, which features collaborations with artists like Usher, Jack Harlow, and Latto. Recently, Usher invited Jungkook to join him on stage at the 2024 Super Bowl, following their collaboration on the remix of “Standing Next to You.” However, Jungkook declined the invitation because he is currently serving in the military.
Cultural critic Kim Heon Sik commented on Jungkook’s absence, stating it reflects HYBE’s failure to recognize the significance of such a performance. He expressed regret that Jungkook missed the chance to showcase his talent as a solo artist and enhance BTS’s global presence.
Fans, known as ARMYs, also expressed their disappointment. Many pointed out that if Jungkook’s enlistment had been delayed by just two months, he could have performed alongside Usher. The Super Bowl halftime show is considered one of the premier stages in the world, where iconic artists like Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga, and Beyoncé have performed.
Had Jungkook accepted Usher’s invitation, he would have made history as the first K-pop artist to perform at the Super Bowl. However, after reports surfaced about his cancellation, HYBE issued a brief statement saying they had “nothing to say.”
Korean media noted that Jungkook was under 30 when he enlisted and could have postponed his service. In South Korea, men who have contributed significantly to pop culture can delay their military service until age 30 with a recommendation from the Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Sports.
Jungkook previously achieved remarkable success when he performed at the 2020 FIFA World Cup ceremony. Many believe that performing at the Super Bowl would have further solidified his position in the global music scene.
As fans reflect on this missed opportunity, they continue to support Jungkook during his military service and look forward to his future performances with BTS.
