Martin Scorsese, the acclaimed director, recently dismissed rumors about his retirement from filmmaking. At 81 years old, he remains committed to creating more films and is currently working on a documentary.
Scorsese was in Turin, Italy, on October 7, where he received an award from the Museum of Cinema. Despite speculation about the end of his career, he reassured fans that he is actively engaged in his work. He is directing a documentary focused on ocean archaeology, which is being filmed in various locations across Italy.
In an interview reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Scorsese stated, “I’m not saying goodbye to cinema at all. I still have more films to make, and I hope God gives me the strength to make them.” He emphasized his passion for filmmaking and his desire to tell more stories.
His latest film, Killers of the Flower Moon, was released in October 2023. The movie stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Lily Gladstone, and Jesse Plemons. It tells the story of Mollie Burkhart, a member of the Osage Nation, who tries to protect her community from a series of murders driven by greed related to oil.
Scorsese’s upcoming documentary is a collaboration with the Sicily region and focuses on the work of underwater archaeologist Lisa Briggs. Her research includes studying DNA found on artifacts recovered from shipwrecks off Sicily’s coast.
On September 24, Variety reported that Scorsese postponed two planned feature films about Frank Sinatra and Jesus Christ. While The Life of Jesus remains in development, the Sinatra biopic—originally set to star Leonardo DiCaprio as Sinatra and Jennifer Lawrence as Ava Gardner—has been canceled. Scorsese had intended to start the Sinatra project in November, but those plans have been put on hold.
As he continues to work on new projects, Martin Scorsese reassures fans that his journey in cinema is far from over.
