Jennifer Lopez is opening up about the challenges she faced over the past year, including the cancellation of her concert tour and her recent divorce from Ben Affleck. In a candid interview with comedian Nikki Glaser for Interview magazine, Lopez shared her thoughts on personal growth and self-acceptance.
Lopez discussed her role as Judy Robles in the upcoming film Unstoppable, which tells the inspiring story of Anthony Robles, a wrestler born with one leg. This role resonated with Lopez, who connected it to her own struggles with self-esteem.
“My whole life has been about proving my worth,” Lopez explained. She emphasized that grappling with feelings of inadequacy begins early in life and can take years to understand. She attributed some of her motivations to childhood experiences, particularly feeling overlooked as a middle child in a busy household.
Lopez reflected on how these early feelings shaped her adult relationships. “You don’t really realize how your upbringing affects you until later,” she said. She expressed newfound empathy for her parents, acknowledging their efforts while recognizing the impact of their parenting styles on her self-image.
The conversation shifted to her recent experiences, which have been particularly challenging. While working on Unstoppable and her new album, This Is Me… Now, Lopez felt a sense of accomplishment before everything seemed to unravel. “I was like, ‘Wow, I got here,’ and then it felt like my whole world exploded,” she said.
Her relationship with Affleck attracted significant media attention, especially following her divorce filing in August. Despite the turmoil, Lopez is focusing on moving forward.
“I’m excited about being on my own,” she stated. “I’m not looking for anyone because I want to see what I can do on my own.”
Lopez emphasized the importance of self-discovery and freedom in her current phase of life. “What if I’m just free?” she mused.
Unstoppable is set for a limited theatrical release in December, and Lopez’s journey continues as she navigates this new chapter in her life.
