The Kamala Harris campaign is distancing itself from the controversy surrounding her recent interview on 60 Minutes. This comes after former President Donald Trump called for CBS to apologize for airing two different versions of Harris’s response to a question.
In a teaser clip released online, which also aired on Face the Nation on October 6, Harris provided a lengthy answer to correspondent Bill Whitaker regarding U.S. influence over Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. However, the final version of the interview that aired on October 7 featured a different, shorter edit of her response.
Both clips have been shared widely on social media, prompting calls for CBS to release the full transcript of the interview. Trump criticized CBS in a post on Truth Social, claiming the network edited Harris’s response to make her seem “more Presidential.”
In response to the controversy, a Harris campaign aide told Variety, “We do not control CBS’s production decisions and refer questions to CBS.” CBS has not yet commented on the situation.
During its broadcast, CBS reported that Trump had backed out of his scheduled 60 Minutes interview. Correspondent Scott Pelley mentioned that Trump’s campaign expressed concerns about fact-checking during the interview. Trump’s spokesman stated that no agreement had been finalized for the interview.
This situation marks the first general election year since 1968 in which neither presidential candidate has appeared on 60 Minutes in October.
The controversy highlights ongoing tensions between Harris and Trump as they both campaign for the presidency. The differing edits of her interview have sparked debate about media representation and transparency in political coverage.
